“Chris first took over as our accountant in 2008. The existing company set up was dated and needed overhauling with a new view on things. Having spoken to other businesses, (as small business owners tend to do,) we wanted to reconfigure our share allocation. During the first few months Chris and his team changed the structure of the company to make us far more tax efficient. Furthermore, the company was in the process of selling some land and having explored the relevant tax connotations ensured that the correct amount was paid on the sale.
In later years, and the introduction of Xero accountancy software, we are now in a position to know the monthly, and even individual project, profit and loss. Something that, as a business, we would have only dreamed about 10 years previous. Knowing your figures as an owner, is critical to growing a business!
Going forward, we now believe that Trotman Builders are in a extremely efficient accounting position, having outsourced the vast majority of our financial administration to Chris and his team, with only the simple task of forwarding supplier invoices to Xero, a task that has replaced employing another admin member of staff.
Meetings are always lighthearted and enjoyable, even though the allocation of the biscuits isn’t always split evenly! Future planning is always a priority, explaining the positive and negatives of various scenarios. Minutes and an action plan are emailed shortly after, giving us business owners a call to action that we do need from time to time.
Running a business is certainly a wave of emotions, with guidance during the lows, knowing that you’re not on your own. And someone bringing back down to earth during those highs, that can be important at times.
